Private Ostenil & Steroids Joint Injections in North London

Advanced relief for joint pain and Osteoarthritis. Restore mobility and reduce inflammation with medical-grade Sodium Hyaluronate injections, delivered by expert clinicians in our North London clinic.

What is Ostenil®?

Ostenil® is a treatment for the symptoms of osteoarthritis. It consists of a solution containing Sodium Hyaluronate, a substance that occurs naturally in the synovial fluid of your joints.

How it Works: In a healthy joint, synovial fluid is thick and slippery, acting as a lubricant and shock absorber. In osteoarthritis, this fluid becomes thin and less effective. Ostenil® Plus injections restore the “viscoelasticity” of the joint fluid, reducing pain and improving the joint’s “shock-absorbing” properties.

Key Components: Our clinic primarily uses Ostenil® Plus, which contains a higher concentration of Sodium Hyaluronate plus Mannitol (an antioxidant that helps the hyaluronic acid last longer in the joint).

Why Choose Steroid Injections for Joint Pain?

Corticosteroid injections are a powerful tool for reducing localized inflammation. They are commonly used to treat conditions such as:
  • Bursitis
  • Tendonitis
  • Acute joint flares
  • Rheumatoid arthritis symptoms

These injections provide rapid relief, often reducing pain significantly within 24 to 48 hours, allowing you to return to your daily activities and physiotherapy.

Which Joints Can Be Treated?

While most commonly used for the knee, Ostenil® is effective for various synovial joints experiencing osteoarthritic changes:
Knee Joint: The most common site for treatment.
Hip Joint: To improve mobility and delay surgical intervention.
Shoulder: Relieving pain from chronic wear or impingement.
Small Joints: Including the base of the thumb (CMC joint), ankle, and great toe.

How quickly does Ostenil® work?
You may feel some immediate relief due to the volume of fluid added to the joint, but the maximum effect usually develops over the first 1–2 weeks as the inflammation reduces and the lubrication settles.

How many injections will I need?
With Ostenil® Plus, most patients only require a single injection to achieve relief for several months. For smaller joints using standard Ostenil, a course of 3 injections a week apart might be recommended.
Are there any side effects?
The treatment is very safe. You may experience temporary localized redness, swelling, or a "fullness" sensation in the joint for 24–48 hours after the injection.
Can I have Ostenil® if I am also taking painkillers?
Yes. Ostenil® does not interact with oral medications. In fact, many patients find they can reduce their reliance on painkillers after the treatment.
Is the procedure painful?
Our clinicians use fine-gauge needles and can apply a topical numbing agent if required. Most patients describe the sensation as a quick "pressure" rather than sharp pain.
