Measles is a highly infectious viral illness that spreads through coughs and sneezes. It is far more serious than “just a rash.” Measles is very infectious, it can cause serious complications and, in rare cases, can be fatal. Measles can be more severe in young people and adults, often leading to hospital admissions.
Measles starts with cold-like symptoms and sore red eyes followed by a high temperature and a red-brown blotchy rash.
Common Symptoms Include:
High fever
Sore, red, watery eyes
Persistent cough and/or runny nose
Small white spots inside the cheeks (Koplik spots)
A blotchy red-brown rash that typically starts on the face and spreads downwards
Important: If you suspect that you or your child may already have measles, please do not attend the clinic in person. To help prevent the spread of infection, call us to arrange a telephone or video consultation.
The best way to protect yourself against measles is to have two doses of the Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) vaccine. MMR is a combined vaccine that protects against 3 separate illnesses – measles, mumps and rubella (German measles) in a single injection.
The Recommended Vaccination Schedule:
For lifelong protection, two doses are required:
First dose: Usually given at 12 months of age.
Second dose: Usually given at 3 years and 4 months.
If You Are:
An adult who missed childhood vaccination
A teenager without a complete record
A parent wanting to get your child back on schedule
We can safely provide catch-up MMR vaccination at any age.
